The entrepreneur behind Britain’s biggest chain of franchised McDonald’s restaurants has switched allegiance to a fast-growing rival and said he is looking forward to working with a brand that appeals to younger generations.
Atul Pathak, 61, who over nearly 20 years with McDonald’s built a portfolio of 43 restaurants with annual revenue of £97.2 million, has teamed up with the German Doner Kebab (GDK) chain and plans to open up to 30 sites across the south of England.
GDK claims to make “expectation-defying kebabs” and employs 4,000 people in Britain. Based in Glasgow, it operates in Sweden, the Middle East and North America and has plans to open 400 restaurants during the next seven years.
