THE humble hamburger has always been a fast food favourite but newly compiled figures show the people of Kerry have an insatiable appetite for McDonalds fare.
he global fast food giant has 95 outlets across the country and between them 22 franchise owners – who own all but two of the chain’s Irish outlets – have racked up over €70 million in accumulated profits according to a recent study of McDonald’s business in Ireland.
The financial figures show that Kerry McDonald’s franchise holder Martin Hoban – who owns and runs the chain’s branches in Tralee and Killarney is among the most successful of the country’s McDonald’s owners and his two drive-thru restaurants have proved to be the most profitable in the country.
Mr Hoban’s McDonalds franchise company – Kingdom Restaurants which was set up in 1996 – isn’t the most profitable of the Irish McDonald’s franchise firms and comes in sixth in terms of accumulated profits.
However, Mr Hoban’s company operates fewer restaurants than the other franchisees and its restaurants have generated a far larger return per premises.
For example the country’s largest McDonalds franchise owner is Iranian national Amir Afsar who has 12 outlets – including McDonalds flagship Irish outlet on Dublin’s Grafton Street – and whose company is sitting on accumulated profits of €11.3 million.
That equates to an average of €941,000 per restaurant.
By contrast Mr Hoban’s two Kerry outlets have generated profits averaging €2.6 million each some €600,000 more than the company’s nearest rival Gerry Heyden whose four outlets are also located in Dublin.
