In an update to a story, we brought you just after Christmas, Flint Township’s Genesee Valley Center has reopened to shoppers… kind of.
After a waterman break closed the mall the day after Christmas with reports of severe damage to many areas of the building, officials announced Friday, December 30th, that they would be reopening the mall to shoppers, but only certain areas.
Officials announced in a Facebook post on Friday that the stores located in Macy’s and JCPenney wings of the mall would reopen starting at 11:00 a.m. Stores with private entrances such as JC Penney, Macy’s, Planet Fitness, Logan’s, and Barnes & Noble have been open since December 27th.
Retailers located in the former Sears wing of the mall the Play Big arcade area will remain closed with no statement on when those areas will reopen to the public as ongoing clean=up continues.
We told you about the water main break and the mall closures shortly after it happened which left tenants scrambling during a busy time for after-Christmas sales and returns.
Pictures circulating on social media showed water throughout the mall’s main halls and some businesses. Bouenni Taekwondo Academy located in the old Sears wing of the mall posted photos on Facebook showing its damage, and damage to other businesses, and commenting on the condition of the mall saying, “The whole mall is flooded and destroyed”.
There has still been no official statement from mall owner Namdar who has owned the mall for the past three years. This story is still developing and we will keep you up to date on any developments.
