How did you get into your profession?
I bought my first McDonald’s Franchise in 1995 in Silverthorne, CO after training in the McDonald’s system for three years. In order to purchase a franchise, I had to graduate from “Hamburger University” in Chicago, which I did with honors!
Who has been instrumental to your success?
I was raised well by hard working parents that came from modest beginnings. My mother was Miss Utah in 1960 and an accomplished vocal soloist. My father became a successful doctor. I am number five of 10 children and learned to work from an early age. I worked to put myself through college until I graduated and started working at McDonald’s.
What is the best moment of your career?
It just happened with the grand opening of my latest McDonalds. Opening a restaurant during these challenging economic times was tougher than any time in my last 30 years. It was an extraordinary celebration to invite the community in and see Team Vance come together to put so many smiles on faces.
What career advice would you give to someone just starting in your industry?
Everyone needs to work at some point in their career in the restaurant industry, whether it’s your first job, part time job or career. The skills you learn taking care of your customers will stay with you for a lifetime. Google sometime, “famous people who worked at McDonalds” and you will be amazed. We work hard and we have a lot of fun. When the teamwork comes together with the ‘Power of V’ it’s a blast! We all have ketchup in our veins!
What was the most difficult experience you encountered as a leader?
Navigating our business through the pandemic. These were definitely unprecedented times, and I couldn’t have done it without my incredible leadership team and the over 400 great crew members.
How do you motivate your team?
By assembling a stellar management team who truly care about every employee and then creating a great atmosphere to work in. We also train and develop our team to be better employees and leaders.
If you were going to teach a college course, what would you teach?
“Shift Management Excellence” Team Vance teaches a seven-week course to our managers on this very topic as part of our development program. We have been doing this for well over a decade and have graduated over 1,000 managers.
